In 2005, Dylan Kendall founded Hollywood Arts, a unique adult educational agency that provided free, arts-based classes to marginalized young adults ages 18-30. By utilizing arts-based learning, Hollywood Arts ignited intrinsic motivation within this hard-to-reach demographic who were excited to learn about topics in which they were interested: acting, fashion, music, digital arts and more. In turn, classes in the creative disciplines (1) led to the development of healthy self-esteem; (2) built strong social networks; (3) taught transferable job skills; and (4) encouraged a passion for life-long learning, putting students who would otherwise fall into chronic dependency on state social services on a path to employment, stability and independence. Over 15 years later, longitudinal anecdotes from these now mid-30s and older individuals demonstrate a remarkable success story. Students who consistently attended classes experienced a near-zero return to social service dependency and are now employed, housed, raising healthy families, and some have even pursued post-secondary, degree-orientated education, demonstrating the effectiveness of arts-based learning.
